Port of Kuryk: Strategic Opportunities and Logistics Solutions by Alliance Multimodal

The Port of Kuryk is a relatively new but highly important seaport in Kazakhstan, located on the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea. It was built to support the country’s growing role as a transport hub between East and West, easing the load on the Port of Aktau and boosting transit potential across the region.
Today, Kuryk plays a vital role in the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR) — also known as the Middle Corridor — which links China, Kazakhstan, the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Europe.
Kuryk — a rapidly growing logistics hub
Since it opened in 2017, the Port of Kuryk has grown steadily and become a key part of Kazakhstan’s logistics network. Today, it includes two dry cargo terminals, a grain terminal, an automobile ferry terminal, and expanded areas for cargo handling and storage.
In 2024, the port handled around 1.96 million tons of cargo, including 25,900 tons of grain through its newly launched grain terminal, which began operations in November.
While Kuryk does not serve container ships directly, it specializes in ferry operations — moving goods from trucks and trains onto vessels, mainly heading toward the Port of Alat in Azerbaijan. This makes it a crucial link in multimodal transport across the Caspian Sea.
A major upgrade was completed in 2024, when dredging work increased the port’s depth from 5.8 to 7.5 meters, allowing it to receive larger ships. In 2025, construction will begin on a new liquid bulk (oil) terminal, and in the longer term, a green hydrogen terminal is also planned — supporting Kazakhstan’s push toward sustainable infrastructure and cleaner energy solutions.

Strategic Importance of the Kuryk Route
The Port of Kuryk is part of the Aktau Seaport Special Economic Zone, offering additional tax and administrative benefits for businesses. Under Kazakhstan’s national maritime infrastructure development plan for 2024–2028, Kuryk is set to evolve alongside the Port of Aktau into a major maritime logistics hub. By 2028, the throughput capacity of both ports is expected to increase by 50%, with container handling capacity projected to triple.
This provides a strong foundation for expanded transit flows through Kazakhstan and enhances the competitiveness of the Middle Corridor amid ongoing shifts in global trade routes.
